The End of Daylight Saving -Will your Sleeping Patterns be Affected? It’s that time of year again… daylight savings has ended. 

Great news right?
Well while most of us welcome the opportunity for more sleep, the end of daylight saving can actually throw a lot of people off as their sleep patterns become out of sync. Their body clock is disrupted causing the potential for them to suffer from moodiness, stress and drowsiness. While it is essentially easier to go back an hour rather than forward, the slight shift can take a while for people to adjust.

Some tips on how to adjust well:
Stick to a routine – a sleep schedule with a fixed bedtime and wake up time will create consistency which is important when trying to sync your body’s natural sleep cycle. Wake up the same time every day, even on weekends!

Turn a light on the moment you wake up – Light is an important cue that tells the body to wake up in the morning. When daylight saving ends and we begin waking up in the dark, it becomes difficult to get out of bed. So to help, expose the eyes to light – while natural light is probably the best cue, artificial light in your bedroom can still do the job.

Avoid stimulating the mind by watching television, using the computer or playing video games. These sorts of activities can hold your interest and keep you engaged making it difficult for your brain to slow down and switch off. Instead perhaps consider listening to some calming music of read a book in a dimly lit area to help you drop off.

Adopt a pre-bed ritual that aims to get your mind and body into a relax state an hour or so before bed time. Take a warm bath, drink a cup of tea or stretch out your body to help you wind down after a long day. These sorts of activities will send cues to your body that it is almost time to sleep.

Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption – Caffeine is a stimulant and will keep you awake while alcohol reduces sleep quality.

And most importantly, remember to set your clocks back the night before! Otherwise things will set off to a disorientating start.
